Editorial: Right to vote
By The North Chilton Advertiser staff
For those of us who are able-bodied, it’s easy to take things for granted. But for people with physical disabilities, tasks that would otherwise be routine are difficult to accomplish.
A grant totaling nearly $5,000 from the Secretary of State’s Office will provide magnifying glasses for each voting precinct in the county. These glasses will help people with low vision to see their ballots more clearly.
The grant is also funding several new tables accessible to wheelchairs. The tables also have petitions for the privacy of individual voters. With the grant, there will be enough tables for about half of the precincts. New laws have provided this equipment to ensure, as much as possible, the privacy of voting for physically challenged individuals. It allows them to enjoy the same independence as everyone else.
